Case Kilatia

Towards a safer future through educational platform

Base for cloud-based safety platform

Kilatia Ltd is a company operating nationwide that provides safety training and services in Finland. Kilatia approached Gofore during 2020 with plans to implement a cloud-based safety platform that Kilatia wanted to include an electronic rescue plan, interactive safety navigation to support the rescue plan, a training register and elements for fire extinguisher and equipment maintenance. Gofore was selected as a partner for the project because of its wide-ranging expertise and accessibility.

Currently, there are no modern safety platforms available that could be used so that users can really learn about safety issues easily and interactively. Kilatia had noticed many shortcomings in the existing solutions when training its customers in safety matters.

At the beginning of the project, Kilatia set good guidelines for the safety platform, and based on this Gofore set out to identify the needs of potential customers through service design. In this way, the safety platform was used to create a solution that meets the wishes and needs of customers.

Gofore helped Kilatia lay the groundwork for the solution to be developed through service design and UI/UX design, and to ultimately implement a safety platform that is available as Kilatia wishes, both in a mobile version and a desktop version.

Unique interactive solution for a unique need

The solution was created using service design tools by first determining the genuine customer needs through user interviews and by creating user paths. The solution was built using agile methods, and Kilatia was actively involved in the decision-making throughout the project.

The solution was implemented in stages, and as the first functionality, an interactive rescue plan, was transferred from Kilatia’s safety platform to production. The ability to see the rescue plan with various instructional videos in a user-friendly way, including on mobile devices, makes it possible to learn about safety anywhere, anytime.

As an additional functionality, the interactive rescue plan includes the possibility of safety navigation on a mobile device. Safety navigation brings the use of the interactive rescue plan to a whole new level, making safety learning related to property and building easy and pleasant.

An AWS cloud solution was chosen as the platform, and already during the project it was noticed how easy and automatic it is to get quick feedback on the implemented functionalities. This is because the automatic publishing solutions run discreetly in the background. Modern, fast, inexpensive and highly configurable components were favoured in the technologies used in deploying AWS. The environments were modelled using the AWS Cloud Development Kit (CDK, TypeScript), which considerably facilitated the work of the cloud expert.

The main priorities of the Kilatia safety platform for AWS were:

  • Account structure
  • Identity and access control
  • Infrastructure automation
  • Containerisation
  • Infrastructure monitoring
  • Centralised log management
  • CI/CD and publications

Continuing the joint development for safer tomorrow

The partnership between Gofore and Kilatia will continue in various ways, for example, by developing new functionalities for its safety platform. The solution has already received very good feedback from Kilatia’s customers.

In addition to the interactive rescue plan, the following functionalities are planned for Kilatia’s safety platform:

  • Safety markings related to the interactive rescue plan or building, for example, for faulty equipment
  • A training register for the various training courses to ensure that the unit’s training courses are up to date and that it is possible for individuals to obtain their training certificates
  • Fire extinguisher and equipment maintenance to ensure that equipment is serviced and reliable

Some of the functionalities are already in the implementation phase at different stages, so users will be able to benefit from these in the near future.

To ensure that the safety platform truly meets the needs of customers in building a safer future, Kilatia’s safety platform will be continuously developed with Kilatia’s customers through service design.
