Together with research firm Verian, we conducted a study exploring the views of decision-makers in industrial companies regarding the obstacles to competitiveness. Our aim was to understand which factors are perceived as the greatest hindrances to business development, and how companies assess their own ability to respond to these challenges. The findings offer valuable insights into the current landscape—as well as where new solutions and fresh thinking are most needed.
While external factors—such as regulation, industrial and export policy, and publicly funded research—also influence competitiveness, this study focused on areas where companies have direct control. The five focus areas are:
- Data and technology – Connecting systems, increasing transparency, and enabling data-driven leadership.
- Customer centricity – Deep, data-based customer insight and holistic experience development.
- Innovation and resilience – Agile, experimental companies gain advantage in uncertain markets.
- Sustainability and responsibility – Green innovations, safety, and ethics differentiate in competition.
- Leadership and ability to change – Fast decisions, strong leadership, and people engagement drive success.
