Safe product development and documentation of the new electric hammer

Lekatech is a Finnish company specialised in manufacturing durable and efficient electric breakers and hammers. They have revolutionised hammer technology by developing the market’s first electric hammer. The new technology represents a significant step forward in the green transition of the industry.

Lekatech’s electric hammer is 70% more energy efficient and produces twice the impact energy of a conventional hydraulic breaker. Lekatech wanted to find out what kind of technical safety requirements the new electric hammer must meet when entering the market.

Huld’s multidisciplinary team of experts has been involved in supporting Lekatech’s product development project. Work has covered the definition of safety requirements according to the Machinery Directive, strength calculations and technical documentation. The cooperation resulted in a durable product and a comprehensive product documentation for the safe use and maintenance of the electric hammer.

During our cooperation, we carefully studied and tested the safety of the electric hammer. This was done not only from the user and the environment point-of-view, but also for the power grid, with which it is directly connected in certain situations. Huld’s experts helped Lekatech ensure that the new product met the requirements of the Machinery Directive, the Low Voltage Directive and relevant electrical safety standards

In addition, material choices and strength calculations ensured that the device is durable even in the most challenging conditions and protected from, for example, dust.

“In terms of quality and usability, the device is designed to require minimal maintenance. Moreover, we have focused on functionality and adjustability of the hammer. To improve usability, the device is also designed to be lighter and easier to control”, says Ville Westerlund, Product Development Manager, Huld.

Huld’s experts assisted also in the preparation of the technical documentation for the electric hammer. This was based on a joint risk analysis. The finished product documentation covers the technical specifications of the device, safety and installation instructions for various excavators. Moreover, it includes operation and maintenance measures.

The documentation relied on user-friendliness. It not only provides information but is also visually appealing and easy to read.

“Careful product documentation ensured a high-quality and safe user experience for Lekatech’s customers. With the documentation, the user can easily find the information they need. Clear illustrations support the user’s needs, for example, in problem situations”, says Laura Kokkila, Senior Documentation Engineer, Huld.

As a result of the seamless cooperation, the reliability and usability of the product have improved tremendously. Thanks to the collaboration, Lekatech now has a clear understanding of how the electric hammer can be launched on the market to meet the highest safety and quality standards. In addition, excellent product documentation enables safe use and maintenance of the product long into the future.
