Artificial intelligence is reshaping how future space systems are developed and operated. At the same time, it raises a question that many organisations in the space sector are still working to answer: how can AI be applied across different use cases without pushing the risk level too high?

AI is increasingly becoming a concrete means of improving development speed and quality, as well as overall system capabilities, also in the space industry. Two demands shape the role of AI in space

Space organisations face two simultaneous pressures.

The first relates to speed. Across the entire space sector, development and execution must become faster as the competition intesifies. A practical way to approach AI in the space industry is to distinguish between two value‑creation domains with fundamentally different risk profiles.

The first is accelerating development and quality assurance. AI can be used in code reviews, to support requirements engineering, and to generate test cases. In these use cases, value is generated quickly and risks remain manageable, as humans stay firmly in the decision‑making loop.

The second domain involves integrating AI into operational systems, for example in control functions or to support autonomy. Here, potential benefits can be substantial, but so is the need for rigorous risk management. What happens if AI misinterprets a situation? How does the system respond to unexpected conditions? These risks must be managed, for example, by limiting AI decision‑making authority and by systematically testing systems in mission‑critical scenarios.

Risk management separates mature players from the rest

One of the central risks associated with AI is hallucination, meaning the ability of models to produce outputs that appear plausible but are entirely incorrect. As models mature, this risk decreases. However, in space operations, an error at the wrong moment can, at worst, jeopardize an entire mission.

Not every AI error carries catastrophic consequences. Recognizing this distinction is critical when seeking efficiency gains. Many of the same practices used to detect human errors can also be applied to AI outputs. The real challenge is whether organisations can identify new risk patterns as development bottlenecks shift and system complexity increases. At the same time, cybersecurity risks grow as development accelerates and architectures become more complex.

In space systems, the foundations of risk management lie in setting clear limits on AI autonomy. The solutions must be carefully tested, and humans must retain responsibility for decision‑making. In addition, robust governance structures and a strong cybersecurity model are essential to keep risks under control.

Successful organisations develop the whole

Experience shows that successful AI adoption starts with clearly defined and measurable use cases. Rather than experimenting everything, it is more effective to begin with activities where benefits can be demonstrated quickly, such as accelerating development, improving quality, or reducing errors.

Equally important is understanding the context in which AI is applied. Risks differ significantly between assistive use and autonomous, operational deployment. Recognizing this distinction helps organisations establish sensible rules and scale AI securely.

Ultimately, success with AI is not just a technical challenge. It also requires leadership, change management, and a shared understanding of what kind of value is being pursued.
