Hiab maintains its industry leader status with the help of digital services

Hiab digitalises the traditional industry with smart technologies. By increasing customer satisfaction and commitment, Hiab strengthens its competitiveness and maintains its position as the world’s leading provider of load handling solutions.

OBJECTIVE

Driving the traditional industry forward with smart technologies

Hiab aims to improve the customer experience throughout the entire life cycle of its load handling equipment. High-quality digital services have become increasingly important, and Hiab wants to utilise these services to stand out from the competition and maintain its position as the industry leader.

“We are constantly thinking of ways to utilise digital services to serve our customers better and support them more proactively. Ideally, our customers will be more satisfied and committed, which will increase our turnover, strengthen our competitiveness and positively impact our future equipment sales”, says Maria Lindroos, Vice President, Product Management and Digital Services at Hiab.

However, companies should not take the digital leap alone. Hiab believes that the leap should be taken with an experienced and diverse partner who can help expand their digital portfolio and provide expertise in the latest technologies while also improving the capabilities of Hiab’s own team.

SOLUTION

Software development, information security work and quality assurance based on needs

The co-operation between Hiab and Gofore began with the development of a mobile application and related data security projects, and has since expanded to quality assurance assessment, among other things.

With the MOBILE APPLICATION, the operators of Hiab equipment can easily see what each error code means and when it is time for the next service. The customers benefit from added value and Hiab receives more comprehensive user information that can be utilised for many purposes, including product development and service reminders.

“Our co-operation on the mobile application went really smoothly, and It was evident that Gofore’s team had years of experience and expertise. It also opened up new perspectives for us, which we can draw on in the future”, says Miro Paintola, software developer at Hiab.

INFORMATION SECURITY CONSULTING AND THREAT MODELLING supported the mobile application development. The information security consulting addressed the technical implementation of the application and identified its potential vulnerabilities and security issues. Threat modelling was carried out as a workshop project, during which Hiab’s practices were assessed with regard to data security.

“Data leaks can be devastating for companies. Thankfully, these projects gave us the peace of mind to release the application to the market. We gained plenty of useful insights from threat modelling for our future operations, and the final report on our information security status and recommended actions was really well done”, says Janne Koski, the head of Hiab’s software development team.

Gofore has been very responsive to our needs right from the start. We go over our organisation's challenges and the areas we would like to work, and then we discuss our next steps. Our co-operation has always been very professional from the planning and structuring of projects to transparency.

QUALITY ASSURANCE ASSESSMENT was used to draw a roadmap for Hiab to ensure the quality of its digital services. The project consisted of several interviews and other data collection methods. The data was then used to create an overall picture of the maturity stage of Hiab’s quality assurance. The final report highlighted issues that should be taken into account in the company’s culture and software development, among other areas.

“We were surprised at how quickly Gofore was able to form a comprehensive picture of our organisation and how we operate. Their experience, background and knowledge were evident. The scope of their recommended actions was also much more extensive than we had anticipated”, says Maria Lindroos, and continues:

“Gofore has been very responsive to our needs right from the start. We go over our organisation’s challenges and the areas we would like to work, and then we discuss our next steps. Our co-operation has always been very professional from the planning and structuring of projects to transparency.

RESULT

Business growth and support for digitalisation

The co-operation and implemented projects enable Hiab to take digitalisation to the next level and develop their new Digital Services unit. Hiab has also gained a more concrete idea of what taking the digital leap and building digital services means in the traditional mechanical engineering industry.

“We have achieved our co-operation objectives really well. All of our projects have been carried out as planned, and our team has been able to learn and grow alongside them. Maintaining our leading position would be difficult with just our own resources, so continuing the co-operation is the obvious choice”, says Maria Lindroos.

The previous projects have been closely linked to the development of Hiab’s business, and the next steps towards digitalisation will follow the same path. The finished mobile application provides a good foundation for future projects.

“We wanted to partner up with a reliable software house, which was our main motivation for choosing Gofore. We were also quickly impressed by Gofore’s extensive expertise. I highly appreciate how Gofore supports us in everything we do, and how everything is tailored to our needs”, says Lindroos.
