Case Kempower

Effortless, effective and reliable EV charging

Kempower designs, manufactures and commercializes charging solutions and services for electric vehicles and machines operating in the most demanding conditions. Kempower is a part of Kemppi-Group.

Kemppi-Group is best known from the global Welding machine brand Kemppi. Since 1949 KEMPPI has delivered thousands of welding machines. In 1977 the group introduced the very first inverter based DC power source in the world. The operation of Kempower started with full force in 2018 as the core technical know-how accumulated over the years formed the backbone of the team that would create the technology that would be Defining Charging.

First focus in QA

You might think that charging an electric car is pretty simple: drive up, park, plug in and have a coffee while the car is charging. In reality the process is much more complicated and complex not to mention heavily regulated with standards and directives. This requires constant improvements and development to the software in the charging stations to stay compliant and to still make the whole customer journey as effortless as possible.

At the starting point Kempower’s R&D department was very busy working on the charging station functionality, and the QA activities were lagging behind. Gofore/Devecto stepped in to help. First task was setting up automated testing of the charging station and charging field. This continued with improvements and maintaining of the firmware build pipeline.

Then remote diagnostics

The charging stations can be used from the local UI, but also a cloud application is needed to configure, operate, and supervise the stations remotely. Gofore supported Kempower in the development of the cloud application, which is used to remotely configure and monitor the operation of the charging stations.

Customer experience is everything

Even if the actual process is technically quite complex under the hood, the charging of an EV should be easy and effortless to the user. There are several parties involved in the charging process:

  • the car manufacturer,
  • the charging station provider like Kempower,
  • the electricity infrastructure provider (electrical supply to the charging) and
  • the charging station operator who is providing user access, invoicing and for example possibility to pre-book a charging spot ahead.

All these need to operate together to make the experience for the user effortless. And effortless charging is the key to increasing numbers of happy EV owners. This what we are working towards.

“Gofore/Devecto provided us a helping hand at critical points in our development work. We needed experienced consultants who could help us immediately because our R&D organization was pretty overloaded at the time. Co-operation has been straightforward and efficient“, says Mikko Veikkolainen, CTO, Kempower.

The cooperation between Kempower and Gofore continues after a successful start and we are looking forward to continue shaping the charging infrastructure of the future with our know-how.
