Building world-class digital capabilities

Metso Outotec is building world-class digital capabilities together with its partners. Success will be built upon long-term cooperation based on trust, regardless of who the participants represent.

“You cannot generate value for customers without digitalisation. For its part, the value of digitalisation is determined by people’s ability to work together,” says Jussi Järvinen, who is in charge of Digital Platforms at Metso Outotec.

Metso Outotec has been consistently developing its digital capabilities since the 1960s. Digitalisation spans all processes, from industrial automation to machine vision systems and customer service, and through digital twins all the way to predictive simulation.

“Digitalisation is one of our key strengths. It enables us to create new developments, streamline operations, and reduce our environmental burden.”

Järvinen has aimed to build long-term teams from the outset.

“I don’t believe in individual, heroic feats. It’s overall performance that counts. That’s why I’ve built a team with mutually complementary skills and trust, regardless of which organisation its members represent.

Cooperation between Metso Outotec and Gofore has continuously expanded. Nowadays, Gofore people can be found in several of Metso Outotec’s Digital Platforms teams.

User engagement and interaction at the heart of development

Metso Outotec continuously promotes mutual understanding and cooperation. Design System is a case in point; it creates a unified user and developer experience for all applications.

“This concerns a style and guidance library for applications, which we use to forge a unified identity for Metso Outotec. It also enables application development based on uniform principles and leveraging prior work in every case. This has major significance when applied on such a large scale,” says Järvinen.

Pihla Mäkinen, who began the design of Design System, and Anmar Matrood and Daniella Pitaro of Gofore, who are now developing its style and user personality libraries alongside users, point out that the overall aim is to support cooperation between people.

“User understanding is therefore the basis for everything. Metso Outotec already had information on users, but we continue to involve people in the design work. We also aim to pilot context-based interviews in genuine user situations.”

No digital service can generate value unless people take to it and understand how to use it. For example, Järvinen invited Gofore’s Agile Coaches, Qaiser Siddique and Juhana Huotarinen, to help with bedding down Design System.

“The main focus of coaching has been the development of team dynamics and decision-making chains. In practice, we’ve conducted trial runs of aspects such as interaction, constructive feedback and clarification of decision-making,” says Siddique.

Järvinen is happy with the results.

“The coaching has clarified decision-making and streamlined the use of Design System.”

Mutual trust as a driver of cooperation

Järvinen characterises cooperation with Gofore as smooth, easy and based on trust.

“Our mutual trust is at the level where there’s no need to specify the content of collaboration in advance. Work is based on an hourly contract and the teams decide on the priorities at any given time alongside the product owner.  Things go smoothly without getting bogged down in the details.”

Järvinen recommends Gofore as a partner for others.

“I can warmly recommend Gofore. I’m satisfied with the overall experience. This and that can happen during years of cooperation, but open communication has been the key to solving every glitch. In addition to possessing collaborative skills and desire, Gofore employees are hard-core experts.”

The Gofore team is also grateful to Metso Outotec as one of its best customers.

“Cooperation with Metso Outotec is open, honest and completely transparent. There is a spirit of co-development, ideas are moved forward open-mindedly, and everyone is treated well. We really feel that we are part of Metso Outotec’s team and joint value creation,” confirm the delighted Mäkinen, Matrood, Pitaro, Huotarinen and Siddique.

Järvinen sees an inspiring future ahead.

“We have a top-notch team and huge opportunities in digitalisation. We are continuously developing new ideas alongside our users.”
